The acclaimed fan-produced prequel film based on Appendices in The Lord of the Rings and dramatising Aragorn & Gandalf’s search for Gollum. The Hunt for Gollum is a non-profit, serious homage to the writing of J.R.R Tolkien and the films of Peter Jackson. Directed by British filmmaker Chris Bouchard, shot on location in England and Wales. Produced by a small army of Tolkien fans and independent filmmakers.

THFG took two years to make and was released as a non-profit Internet-only video by agreement with Tolkien Enterprizes.

This first Youtube version, slightly extended with 1 scene added back in. Later versions have improved audio volume and brightness.

  1. So much is great in this (probably low budget) fanfic movie… if the people in charge if the new series at Amazon have any brain, they will sure follow some of this movie's great stylistic choices! Acting, music, location and shots… all truly masterful! Well don, sirs and mams!

  2. Even tho im super late to this, but my god this is actually quite good! If only we had more ppl like this to make small films for either LOTR, Star Wars, Hunger Games Etc.

  3. After he said," We'll poke out its eyes, we'll wring its filthy neckses, we wouldn't hurt a fly" after saying that, he's staying in the sack, and he probably eats flies

  4. Ανέβασα ολόκληρη τη ταινία με ελληνικούς υπότιτλους στο Youutube, εδώ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELTSKrGFvaY

  5. I have only just found this movie. Why it has never been added to my suggestions before, I will never know, as my main interest on YouTube is LOTR and All Things Tolkien.

Anyway, Fantastic Job to everyone involved. Every aspect of the film was Top Class! From the Acting, Music & VFX to the Editing, Costume and Prosthetics team.

When studying Digital Arts at College, we had to make a film, so I know how hard it is to reach the Quality of the Production of this film.

No doubt the Talented Individuals who made this film will have moved on in the Industry, but I sincerely hope that, in times to come, they will produce more Movies for fans of Tolkien and other Sci-Fi/Fantasy Fans.

Thank You, THANK You, THANK YOU!

P.S. It was SO good, it didn't feel like 39 minutes long, it actually only felt like I was watching it for 15 minutes – AND, I wanted to watch more!
Did anyone else feel like that?

  7. It says about Sauron's search for the ring, "For 500 years it had remained out of his sight". I thought it was a bit longer than that. I know it spent 500 years with Smeagol but surely before that it spent a couple of millennia at the bottom of the Gladden River.

  8. Wow, this is AWESOME!!!🙌 It's amazing what can be done, with great passion & knowledge of Tolkien's work. I can only imagine what the creators of this short film could've done with vast resources?! That said, given what they had to work with… This is on par with anything Peter Jackson did with LOTR. And superior to what he did with The Hobbit. I would luv to see more short films based on aspects of Tolkien's writing not yet put into film. Huge props to everyone involved with this project!👍 A job very well done!!!💯👊

  9. Good techniques for keeping the CGI costs at a minimum especially with Gollum, having most scenes far away and for the close ups mainly him in a sack to save it all up for the last scene in which I do say actually quite looks still impressive!

  10. Acts 4:24 24When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign LORD," they said, "you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.

  11. What a well made movie! The pacing, the mood, the characters – all of it is true to the movies and the story. This was clearly a labor of love. Thank you!
